Future Perfect Album "After The Fall" Reviewed

North Wales electronic duo Future Perfect have just released the CD version of the album "After The Fall", it's an album that shows confidence and their sound, on this their 3rd album, has a harder edge to it and is dark and uplifting.

The track "Fall" is the opening track on the album and is a track that has secured a position in White Lion Radio's Top 10 tracks of 2015. It's a brilliant track and we love the use of the Korg M1 on this track, choir sounds that give the track a more haunting feel and deeper sound. One of Future Perfects best ever tracks. "Dangerous Desires" also sees the band on fine form, Rebecca's vocals are delivered with attitude, dark electro at it's best, Musically and vocally this track delivers, the piano in the middle 8 was an unexpected treat, mixed in beautifully with the dark synth sounds.

"Walking On Knives" is a short instrumental piece akin to what Depeche Mode have done on some album releases. This fitted in really well with the concept of the album. "Neo Rom Com" is a full on in your face electronic track, glam guitar and throbbing bass dominate this track. The fusion of synths and Simons vocals work really well, one of our favourite tracks on the album. "Protect And Survive" is a track that has been featured on our shows and is very upbeat, four to the floor rhythm punctuated with synth stabs, the song boasts a great chorus with blended vocals by both Simon and Rebecca. It's a track that shows the "Lighter" side of Future Perfect. "A.D.S.R" is another short interlude track that makes good use of vocal effects. The tracks leads into "Spaces" which is another fine electro pop track, Rebecca takes the lead vocal on this one, it's a fantastic track with a very strong chorus, great lyrics on this track, this is probably the one track that is a throwback to their album "Escape". The final track is "Excess", this is a song that draws on the influence of both Gary Numan and Depeche Mode, definitely has a much harder edge than the other songs on the album, didn't know what to make of this track initially but after a few listens it does grow on you.

The album does come with 4 bonus tracks, Destination have remixed "Neo Rom Com" and "(After The) Fall" both of which have been given the Destination "Synthpop" treatment and are both fine remixes. "Priest Of Excess" is a remix of "Excess" by Immune System, it's more stripped down than the original version but it is a superb remix. The last of the bonus tracks is the instrumental version of "Fall" which highlights just how good this track is musically.

This is an album that demonstrates that they have expanded their sound palette and have produced a collection of songs that are energetic and moody. This really is an impressive 3rd album.

9/10

Tenek's New Album "Smoke And Mirrors" Reviewed

Tenek make a welcome return with their new album "Smoke And Mirrors", the follow up to the 2010 album "On The Wire".

The first thing that is immediately noticeable is how much fuller the sound is, which is down to the fact that some new musicians have joined the "Tenek family". Drummer Steve Clarke who's contribution to this album should not be underestimated, in addition on Bass on some of the tracks are Michael Steer, Paul Jackson and Sam Morrison. It definitely adds to the powerful sound of the album.

The opening track "Everything Lost" is truly excellent with some superb bass-lines and synth parts, it's a well rounded track with a strong chorus line, a potential single maybe? "Fear For Nothing" is a rockier sounding track with punchy synths and some very impressive bass by Michael Steer, a strong vocal too and the drums certainly make an excellent impact with this track. "Another Day" was the first single released off the album and it is brilliant, i'm immediately drawn to that "Numan" style string synth, some great accomplished guitar work as well, a solid track that rates as one of Tenek's best tracks. Next is their recent single "What Kind Of Friend", which fuses electronics and guitars perfectly and of course has a great sing-a-long chorus, a track I would think is a firm live favourite.

"Blue Man" has a great synthetic intro and is a track where the drums come into their own, this is more electronic and has lush layered synth sounds, it's a slower paced track and for me is an instant favourite.

"Headlights" has a Duran Duran influence on it, with a hint of a Numan influence also thrown in for good measure, the blend of electronics and guitars again is perfect, this has moments of pure dance bliss as well as atmospheric sections, a very interesting and impressive song. Love it!

"A New Foundation" was originally included on their "Another Day EP" and is a track I have always liked, quite anthemic in its delivery, another fine synth part in the chorus and I love the piano part in the middle 8, which kind takes the track into another direction, before the chorus kicks in again."Sunlight" is a track that veers more to their electronic side, a well constructed track with some great sounds, it's a different sounding track, with some impressive ambient strings that really do add to the atmospherics of the track. "Immitation Of Life" is a superb track, probably their most commercial track on the album, great mix of guitars and synths, an uplifting chorus that is a throwback to Numan's "Replicas" album sound.

"Soloman" is a very interesting track, it's again a lot more electronic than some of the tracks on the album, I like the bass-line (very Ultravox) and that beautiful, yet simple melody line, it's quite a moody track and is definitely one of the highlights on the album and for me the best track on the album. The album closes with the title track of the album, which again has a heavy Gary Numan influence running through it, a Mid paced track that once again makes brilliant use of both their electronic side and their more rockier side. Tenek are masters at getting the balance between the two absolutely spot on.

An album 5 years in the making but the result has been well worth the wait, the songs are strong and the production is outstanding. It is an album that is diverse and clearly shows the development in Tenek's sound. Personally I think this is their best album to date and definitely worth investing in.

9/10

The album is available on CD and is also available as a Digital Download via Bandcamp.

New Eurotix Album "Deux" Reviewed

Swedish Synthpop duo Eurotix return with their second album "Deux", the follow-up to the brilliant "The Secret".

Larry and Dennis have expanded their sonic pallette on the new album, whilst retaining those melodic hooks that are their trademark and they once again make good their statement that they put the "Pop" back into "Synthpop". "Hello Susie" opens the album and as you would expect is a full on melodic romp, perfect pop and definitely single material. "Our Spaceboy", again doesn't disappoint, quite close to the sound of tracks on their debut album this one. "Don't Trust The DJ" is a much harder electro track with an impressive punchy bassline. "Only For Love" is the first ballad on the album and sees Dennis on fine vocal form, a heart wrenching song, beautifully executed. "Will You Remember Me?" is a fantastic italo disco track and a definite highlight on this album, following that we have the recent single "Kiss Them For Me", a brilliantly written song about Charles and Diana, search out the bands video for this track if you haven't seen it, it is hilarious.

Track 7 is outstanding, it takes it's blueprint from the Ultravox track "Mr X" (One of WLR's Favourite Ultravox tracks), with it's chugging bassline and erie sound, fast becomming one of our favourite tracks off the album. They clearly show that they are more than capable of writing songs outside their comfort zone. "Su Su Superman" is the one weak track on the album, it seems out of place when you listen to the other tracks, I suspect they just wanted to make a fun song with no boundaries with this one. Dennis is the master at singing electronic ballads and my word, on "The Innocent Years" he has raised the bar, the combination of Larry's music and his vocals make this one of the best Eurotix tracks recorded to date. "One Step Forward" definitely has a few influences, New Order, Shannon and Freeeze amongst them, a great 80s Hip-Hop tinged track. Next we have "Stun-Gun Set To Her Face" a synthpop track done club style, it's banging and brilliant, great chorus, which would be heaven in a "Eurovision" environment, synth pitch bends, it has everything!! And so to the closing track, the 6 minute epic that is "The Best Of Times", with it's medium paced italo disco backing track this is as good as it gets, a beautifully written and executed song, it has your emotions running everywhere, it's easy to see why this has become an instant fan favourite and that includes us, it is perfection.

I can't say how impressed we are with this band, they work really hard and the emphasis is always on recording top quality synthpop songs, something they consistantly do with every release.

Gentlemen take a bow, because this is an outstanding album, you haved raised the bar again......and to think "Are You Strong Enough?" isn't included!

9/10

New Metroland EP Reviewed

"Re-Design" is the final single Metroland are releasing off their stunning album "Triadic Ballet".

"Re-Design" is an edited remix of the 3 part track "Design" off the album and works really well in edited format with new synths and sequencer parts added. Next is the gem "Vers La Cote D'Azur", a track that sets your mind off on a journey by car through the french coastline, play "Enjoying The View" off their first album followed by this track, it works brilliantly! The final track on the standard EP is the stunning Polynomiq 11 minute plus remix of "Design", a breathtaking remix with beautiful pads and driving sequencers, it almost has an ambient feel to it....brilliant!.

The Spacious EP edition opens with the Jauzas The Shining Remix of "Design" which boasts an "Acid" bass-line and some haunting voice pads, it's quite a sinister remix, which I could see forming part of a soundtrack off a horror film, this is quite different from the original and must say I really like it. Next is a second version of the track "Vers La Cote D'Azur", which is the Notstandskomitee's Nightdrive Remix, this has s lightly more upbeat feel to the other version in this set and is as equally brilliant as the one on the normal EP. The Spacious EP closes with Jean-Marc Lederman's remix of "Design" and is once again vastly different from the original, this features some great percussion sounds and effects and is more minimal than the other versions contained in this collection, a solid end not only to this EP collection but to the whole "Triadic Ballet" project.

10/10 flawless

Links to purchase the EP's to follow ......

Chapter 3 in the Metroland story is eagerly awaited.

Recently Louis Zachert (Passenger L) passed away suddenly. Louis was an integral part of the sound of Metroland and had worked with the duo for more than two decades on various projects and was responsible for the mastering of Metroland's material, I'm sure this final release off "Triadic Ballet", on which he was involved with, will serve as a fitting tribute to him.

New Vogon Poetry Album Reviewed

Vogon Poetry are another excellent electronic band that hail from Sweden and they are about to release their new album "The Prefect Stories".

The opening track is very cinematic, the immediate image I had was the film "Bladerunner", especially with the sequenced bass-line and strings, a very strong and confident vocal too. "Never Too Late" is a darker sounding track that again has filmic qualities.

Their is a definite Ultravox influence on the impressive "Spit It Out" with the haunting piano and chugging bass-line, superb vocals again on this track.

The Bistromath Remix of "Possibilities" has a similar feel to the previous track. "Moments" is the jewell in the crown so far, a brilliant track that boasts an excellent sequence pattern and achingly beautiful vocals, loved everything about this track. "Hyperspace Bypass" has a wonderful sequenced melody line running through it, a very positive and upbeat track. "The Great Big Nothing" has as it's focal point a powerful vocal set against a dark and moody backing track.

"Afraid" is an uptempo track that uses sampled sound effects and voices and is the one track I struggled to connect with, that said, it does have a good chorus line. Next is "virtues" which is fantastic with it's moody piano stabs and synths which morph into a great minimalisic chorus section, really liked this track.

The final track is a remix by Glenn Main of the track "Never Too Late" and he has done a fantastic job of it, more atmospheric, beautiful piano pieces and a great vocal mix.

Did not know what to expect with this album, but I have to say, it once again shows that Sweden is setting the bar very high where electronic music is concerned, it's a solid album with many highlights and boasts a brilliant fusion of well thought out music and stunning vocals.

8.5/10

Lola Dutronic's Album "Lost In Translation" Reviewed

I've liked Lola Dutronic for a while, their sound is beautiful and endearing and i'm delighted to be given the opportunity to review their album "Lost In Translation".

They are a duo, Richard Citroen from the UK, now based in Toronto in Canada, who does the music and Stephanie B the vocalist from Dusseldorf in Germany.

"Modern Suicide" is a wonderful opening track with a great sing-a-long section in the last 3rd of the song. Musically it sets the tone for the album. "Reality TV" has a harder edge to it and is followed by "I Believe" which shows off Stephanie's angel like vocal qualities, a great track with a brilliant chorus. Next a song about heartbreak, the brilliantly titled "Go Fuck Yourself", how they have managed to compose such a superb mid tempo track with this title I will never know, it is an outstanding track with well though out lyrics.

This band have a great knack of getting a lot out of so little, simple melodies dominate another killer track in the shape of "Trying Not To Think About You". "Harley Davidson" has a haunting feel to it with Stephanie singing in French, quite a dark sounding track."I Wanna Mmmm You" is a pleasant mid tempo track, which is followed by "Bulletproof Celebrity" (Great title!) a bass driven track, it's another track that edges to the darker side musically. the upbeat "There Goes My Heart Again" is a great slice of electro pop, a dreamy chorus line which draws you in, a track that shows how well these two compliment each other.

"The End Of the World"....wow, what a stunning and heart felt rendition of the song made famous by The Carpenters, they have taken the song to another level with this version...outstanding, this will blow you away! "Keep On Dancing" is a four to the floor electronic dance track which is followed by the bands festive number "The Christmas Disco", if you haven't heard this before you are in for a treat! Listen to the lyrics they are very clever, a brilliant Christmas track.

"Happy Endings" is another excellent track that has a chorus you just want to sing a long too.
The album closes with a reprise of the opening track "Modern Suicide" with a great section of lyrics that thanks you for listening ............No thank you for giving me the pleasure of hearing this outstanding piece of work!

I have to say I wasn't expecting this to be such a fantastic album, but it is, from start to finish the
songs have quality and depth.

An album you should invest in 10/10

The album is available from the Lola Dutronic Bandcamp page, where you can also listen to the album in full!

The band also have a Facebook page.

Recommended Albums On White Lion Radio

We bring to a conclusion our recommended albums of the day here on White Lion Radio, with an album that has recently been released.

Johan Baeckström is one half of Swedish Synthpop duo Daily Planet, their recent album "Two" was also a recommended album choice and it is a great pleasure to choose Johan's new solo abum "Like Before", which was released earlier this month, as our final recommended album of the day.

As you would expect Vince Clarke's Yazoo influence is evident throughout the album which is synthpop perfection and we especially like the tracks, "Starlights", "Great Unknown", "Come With Me", "Winter Times", "Forever And A day" and "Saturdays In Silesia" (Rational Youth Cover).

If you thought Daily Planet's album "Two" was good" this is as good, if not better, than that album.

Three words of advice......Get this album!

Recommended Albums On White Lion Radio

It's back to the UK for White Lion Radio's recommended album of the day.

UK Synthpop duo Destination are another of those bands that we have been watching closely over the last few years, in fact since their debut album "Alternate Realities". For todays recommendation though we turn to their 2nd album "Close Your Eyes And Make A Wish", which was released in 2010 and their best album to date with infectious music by Glynn Jaine and the etheral vocals of Bridget Gray.

The album is littered with top quality tracks and we recommend you listen to "Atmosphere", "Inside Your Mind", "Touch (Ribbons Round My Heart", "Say" (Our favourite track off the album), "No Mercy" and "Piano Softly".

If you like Erasure then you will love this album.

Recommended Albums On White Lion Radio

Today's recommended album of the day is "The Destiny Room" by Twins Natalia.

Twins Natalia seem to have been around for years and it is hard to believe their stunning track "When We Were Young" was released in 2008! Their debut album "The Destiny Room" has been worked on since then up to it's release in 2014.

The album has a european feel to it and has a very distinct sound and boasts several top quality synthpop songs aside from the singles "When We Were Young" and "I Avoid Strangers" we also recommend the tracks "Into My Arms", "Don't Fade Away", "Set Love Free" and "Kleiner Satellit".

Another classic electronic album to add to your collection.

For today's recommended album of the day on White Lion Radio we go all the way back to 1982!

Rational Youth have a rich history on the independant electronic music scene and the band are still going strong today and touring.

We are massive fans of their 1982 album "Cold War Night Life" and we think it is their best album. It includes the classic singles, "Saturday's In Silesia" and "City Of Night", synthpop at it's best and we also recommend you listen to the tracks "Close To Nature", Beware The Fly", "Ring The Bells" and "Dancing On The Berlin Wall".

Do yourself a favour and grab a copy of this album, it doesn't disappoint.

It's Scandinavia once again for today's recommended album of the day on White Lion Radio, it's not Sweden though, this time it is Norway.

Electro Spectre's brand of Electro-Pop is both appealing and enjoyable and this is certainly evident on their album "Bullets & Desert Blooms" an album full of infectious songs. Our favourite tracks are the singles "You Push For The World", "Your Love Is A Criminal" and "Graveyard Eyes" and we also like the tracks, "As Long As It Pays", "Silver Eyes" and "Bullets & Desert Blooms".

A solid electronic album that would fit into your electronic music collection quite nicely.

Recommended Albums On White Lion Radio

We stay in Europe for today's recommended album of the day and focus on Greek synthpop duo Marsheaux.

White Lion Radio have been a massive fan of Marsheaux for 10 years and they have got better with every release and recently released their own complete recording of the Depeche Mode album "A Broken Frame" which is outstanding and an album you should definitely get, but today we are going to concentrate on their album "Inhale", which was released in 2013 and is perfection from start to finish.

WLR recommend the tracks "Self Control", Secret Place". "Inhale", "To The End", "Alone" and "End Is A New Start".

You need to own this classic Synthpop album.

For today's recommended album on White Lion Radio we head for Germany.

The band concerned are called N-Frequency and the album, which is quite obscure, is called "Monomatic" and it has a similar minimal feel as the album "New Wave" by Mr Jones Machine.

Early Depeche Mode and early Human League also spring to mind when listening to this album and we recommend you listen and enjoy the tracks "Let Love Be Your Guide", "Radioman", "Elaine", "Your Careless Smile" (Our favourite track, it is so infectious), "Gloomy Nights" and "Secret Garden".

A truly excellent album that doesn't disappoint.

Delve beyond the singles and you will find a wealth of well executed electronic tracks and we recommend you also listen to the tracks, "Firefly", "Bleed For Me", "Words Like That" and "Not Even You".

Recommended Albums By White Lion Radio

What a fantastic recommended album of the day we have for you today, again it is by a synthpop band based in Sweden, they are called Daily Planet and the album is called "Two".

Released in 2014 this is one of those albums that is a joy to listen to from start to finish. If you are a fan of Yazoo or early Depeche Mode then this album will not disappoint!

It features the stunning singles "Trust" and "Fragile" and if you look beyond those 2 tracks there are even more slices of synthpop heaven to be found and we also recommend the tracks "Unforgiven", "Stay With Me", "Belong", "Alone" and "Nobody's Friend".

If Vince and Alison were to record a new yazoo album it wouldn't be as good as this.

Today's recommended album on White Lion Radio is the self titled album by Glass Apple Bonzai who are from Canada.

WLR have been following this band for some time and we really do like the retro sound the band have and their debut album is retro from beginning to end. The album was released in May 2014 and includes the brilliant single "The Freeze". A lot of this album is influenced by early Gary Numan and Ultravox, and we recommend you listen to the tracks "The Fist", "Fade To Sorrow", "Impossible To Ignore" and "The Girl With The Telephoto Eye".

This is an album that might just surprise you, add it to your electronic music collection.

For today's recommended album on White Lion Radio, we go all the way back to 2001.

Neuropa, from Australia, were one of the first synthpop bands to appear on the independent electronic music scene and released their debut album in 1997. The album which caught our attention though, was the brilliant "Beyond Here And Now", a collection of well crafted melodic synthpop tunes.

The album features the infectious singles "Bound" and "Beyond Here And Now", alongside those two gems we also recommend the tracks "True Love Wars", "New Day", "True Believer" and "Skin Deep".

A band that is still going today and if you haven't come across them before, this is the album to get.

Once again this is pretty much a perfect synthpop album from beginning to end and is a very impressive second album by the band.

The album features the single "Dead End" and to be honest we can pretty much recommend you listen to all the tracks on this album as their are so many highlights, but we will pick the following tracks as the very best on the album, "Escape Artist", "Cardiac Arrest", "Ghost", "Only Human" and "Thanks For Nothing".

You won't be disappointed if you added this album to your Synthpop collection.

Recommended Albums By White Lion Radio

White Lion Radio's recommended album of today is "Metropolis" by Parralox, who are from Australia.

The album was Released in 2010, and to us, is as perfect a Synthpop album as you can get and we liken it as one of the most complete electronic albums since "Dare", by The Human League. The core line-up for the making of this album was John von Ahlen and Amii Jackson, Amii has since left the band.

The album features the brilliant singles "I Sing The Body Electric" and "Supermagic" but there are more perfect synthpop songs to discover and we also recommend the tracks, "Ancient Times", "Love Is Enough", "Promised Land", "Acrimony" and "Failure".

Whilst the releases since Amii's departure have been a little disappointing "Metropolis" is without doubt a jewel in the Synthpop crown.

An album you should invest in.

Recommended Albums By White Lion Radio

We once again travel to Sweden for todays recommended album on White Lion Radio.

The album is called "New Wave", by Mr Jones Machine, and it was released in January 2005.

We love this album for it's simplicty, it's quite minimal and I suppose you could liken it to Depeche Mode's debut album "Speak & Spell". We have played tracks from this album quite a few times on WLR over the years and we recommend you listen to "Jaguar", "My Time", "A Place In The Sun", "Somewhere In Nowhere", "Shadow Of A Doubt" and "Winter Stays On", all of which are catchy and melodic.

It's an album that might just surprise a few people!
