Introducing.....808 DOT POP

808 Dot Pop is a new project by Passenger S, who many will know is part of the Belgian electronic music concept band Metroland, this project has a lighter sound, however, it is driven by a concept, the concept is "The Colour Temperature", what is Colour Temperature? Well, The color temperature of a light source is the temperature of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates light of a color comparable to that of the light source, all very scientific but as the releases are rolled out things will become a bit clearer.

One key aspect is the "Incandescent Bulb" and what makes a bulb and also looks at the effect of different bulb colours and the heat they radiate.

It is with great pleasure we announce details of the first 808 Dot Pop release, which is now available.

The debut single is called "Blackbodies (Pulsation)", the single features the lead track and the track "Cie1960 (color space)".

In addition there is also a second Digital Download release, which is called "Blackbodies (Variation)", this features the main track in an extended format, just like those classic 80s 12 inch singles, as well as, the tracks " Cie1960 (expanded color space)", again an 80s style 12 inch and "Kelvin (3500)".

All of these tracks/versions are exclusive to this release, however, a further remix of "Blackbodies" will feature on the forthcoming album "The Colour Temperature".

You can buy the "Blackbodies (Variation) EP via Bandcamp here

Projekt Ich Album "By Train Through Countries" Reviewed

Projekt Ich is the name German musician Ulf Muller works under and over the last couple of years he has set out on a very interesting journey, which has resulted in the release of the album "By Train Through Countries".

what makes this so interesting is the fact that virtually all the tracks were released as singles before the release of the album. Each single has featured different lead vocalists from the independent electronic music scene, in addition each single release was backed by a number of remixes, which is important, that will become evident at the end of this review, so pay attention :)

The album opens with "Time For memories", which features label mates Plexiphones and it is a good solid opening track, which has a bit of a 60's vibe about it, synths sound superb and add to the depth of the track, all rounded off with an excellent vocal, has quite a joyous chorus.

Now I am a big fan of the work of Marcus Mokuso of Rename (Their best of compilation is a must for synthpop fans), he has a unique vocal style, clearly influenced by Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, the track "New Dreams For Old" is bright and optimistic and definitely is the most "Synthpop" track on the album, great synth sounds throughout and Marcus is on top form. My favourite track on this album. Superbly produced.

"Where Are The Angels" features Mick L Angelo of 5TimesZero, I like the intro on this track, nice use of rhythm sounds and the synths are fabulous, Ulf knows how to get the best out of a synthesizer, lots of pad layers, another fine example of synthpop, the vocals add a haunting flavour to the track.

I am very familiar with the work of Erik Stein, vocalist in the band Cult With No Name, as well as providing vocals on 2 of the tracks on this album, the first being "Running", he also provided vocals to tracks on Rusty Egans' album "Welcome To The Dancefloor". I really enjoy Erik's vocal style, he has a voice that draws you in and you feel compelled to listen to what he has to say, he certainly adds dimension to this track, a synth laden track with an atmospheric sound.

"Little Star" is a wonderful synthpop tune that features Catrine Christensen of Softwave on vocals, I love the erie synth sounds and the upbeat nature of the song, some nice sequencer touches and the rhythm section is excellent. A big favourite of mine :)

Like Projekt Ich, !Distain are signed to the German independent label Echozone and they have worked together brilliantly on "Thanks", i'm a big fan of !Distain and I have to say this track is a highlight on this album, quite minimalistic but everything about it is perfect, it has emotion and lovely melodic synth hooks, a beautiful ballad, pushes "New Dreams For Old" very close for best track on the album.

Next we have the first German vocal track on the album, "Es Ist Wahr" which features Michael Draw of Otto Dix, it has a dark sound and is a track I struggled to get into, probably partly because it is in German, has a bit of a harder edge overall and strays from the synthpop sound of many of the other tracks on the album.

Caroline McLavy is on vocal duty on "The Sleepy Time", this too has a much harder edge to the sound and I wasn't keen on the vocal effects used, probably my least favourite track on the album.

"The Lightman", featuring Oleg Degtiarev sees Ulf back into Synthpop territory and it is a fantastic track, reminded me a little of early Depeche Mode, certainly sound wise, Oleg delivers a haunting vocal' I think the synth work on this song is exceptional and again is superbly produced.

The music on "Doch Das Was Blieb" is excellent, superb rhythm parts too, I would love to hear an english language version of the song, it has something that captures your attention.

"Forgotten Dreams" features another band signed to Echozone, Analogue-X, and together they have produced a wonderful warm sounding track, the vocals are excellent, the boy/girl vocals work really well. Beautiful pad sounds that give the track almost a cinematic sound, a fabulous track and a big favourite of mine.

Erik Stein features again on "This Time I'm Over You", yet again his vocal performance is mesmerizing, underpinned by a quality music backdrop, the synths on this track are really impressive, wonderful choice of sounds and some nice melodic touches. Another track I am a big fan of.

"Lullaby For Alisa" is a very haunting track and would be perfect as a soundtrack song for a horror movie, dark electronics used to very good effect, the vocal by Asia Wolf is as equally haunting, I like this track because it is very different to the rest of the album.

The third and final German vocal based track is "Das Meer", despite being in German I quite enjoyed this track, musically it is quite minimalistic but the synths are allowed to shine when required.

The album closes with the title track, which is an instrumental, which I think has filmic qualities, the use of guitar alongside the electronics work well, I could see this track being used as part of a soundtrack to a thriller.

I like what Ulf has done with this album and it was a very good move to get various vocalists on board, as it gives the album a uniqueness, I hope he decides to go down that route in the future, because it works so well.

I have been fortunate to have been given the opportunity of hearing this album evolve as the various singles have been released and it has been quite a journey, factor into that the wealth of remixes available for the majority of the album tracks, you can create any number of different versions of the album, another smart move by Ulf.

A mention too for the artwork, it is simply stunning.

8.5/10

I hope you paid attention to what I said at the start of this review, if you have then your patience will be rewarded....

Ulf is making available all of the singles and remixes as FREE DOWNLOADS if you purchase the CD version of the album, that equates to over 16 hours of music and over a 180 tracks, the album is available on CD for just 12 Euros, now that is an absolute bargain and trust me when I say, the remixes are superb too.

Daybehavior's New Album "Based On A True Story" Reviewed

Daybehavior are back with a brand new album called "Based On A True Story", the follow up to "Follow That Car!", released in 2012. Carl Hammer, Paulinda Crescentini and Tommy Arell have been together as Daybehavior since 1993 and have a refreshing sound, filmic and cinematic without losing their synthpop roots.

We had an indication of the sound of the new album with the release of the stunning "Change" in 2015, one of the most outstanding synthpop songs produced on the independent electronic music scene. It is an album they have taken great care with, to ensure they would be putting out an album of the highest quality.

The album opens with "Burning Slowly" and what an epic start to the album, superb electronic overtones and dreamy vocals from Paulinda, what a breathtaking voice she has, sounds perfect against the synthetic backdrop, which mixes electronic synth sounds and orchestral parts, something Daybehavior manage to mix effortlessly, the track has a superb chorus too, a very strong track on the album and wonderfully produced.

"Tears That Dry" is pure synthpop heaven, superbly crafted melodic parts and excellent sequenced sections, it is catchy and again Paulinda delivers a superb vocal, a word of praise for the music production too, top class, lots going on, with everything having its place. The twist in the last third of the song is outstanding. A potential single.

Next we have the recent single "There's Nothing Else", a track that showcases their filmic/cinematic sound qualities, storm and rain effects open the track, quite dark sounding and atmospheric in parts, great use of synth sounds and of course the vocal is exquisite. This is their trademark sound, it has everything, its dramatic, haunting and beautiful, it was the perfect choice to be chosen as a single to showcase the album, pure perfection.

Following that we have the upbeat "Driving In My Car", which has an excellent rhythm and bass section and the most delightful chorus, love the melodic synth that runs alongside the vocal, the layers to each of their songs is truly staggering, fabulous melodic synth parts continue throughout the song, this is pure european synthpop bliss, surely another candidate for a single. Reminded me of Marsheaux :)

"A Boy A Girl" has an excellent piano section as the backdrop to the vocal, orchestral strings/violins are very effective on this incredible track, the music is stunning, as the track develops the synths kick in and the orchestration returns to great effect, best described as a soundtrack ballad. Superb again, production stunning!

"Serges Kiss" is straight from the Daybehavior synthpop blueprint, it has a wonderful warm sound, great use of melody and a dreamy vocal, the track also has a great electro bass-line, love the way it builds into the chorus sections, which once again are top class.

"Solitude" again makes fantastic use of orchestral sounds to give their sound that dramatic tone, a brilliant ballad that is haunting in delivery with outstanding music, I hear a Pet Shop Boys influence in this track, a well constructed electronic ballad, they have certainly developed their sound.

Interestingly the start of the next track "It All Started With A Train" has a touch of Pet Shop Boys about it, the whispered vocals add a sinister vibe to the song, nice synth parts again, definitely a track that adds a little something different on the album, I could very easily see this fitting in nicely as part of a soundtrack to a film drama or thriller.

"A Perfect Day" showcases Paulinda's vocal, superbly delivered over a more minimal sound palette, that is erie and haunting, exactly what was required on this song, sometimes less is more. The synth section for the middle 8 is excellent. A dark ballad that delivers on every level, truly outstanding.

Next we have something of a surprise, the single "Change" in extended form and if you like those classic 1980s 12 inch single mixes, then you will love this, a track that was always going to benefit from being extended. As for the track itself, as I said at the start of this review, a brilliant synthpop track, what more can I say about it?

"The Whispering Garden" is another well executed ballad with some nice synth touches, again it is a track that gives space for the vocal to shine, that said the music is perfect, a dark and engaging backdrop that seems to build the tension in the track, excellent again.

The closing track is called "Washed Away" and is a fitting way to close the album, it is moving and develops really well, it is a ballad with sentiment and I must say, that yet again, they usual orchestral strings to such good effect.

This is a band at the top of their game, superb production throughout on this album and Paulinda is on fine form vocally, 12 wonderfully crafted songs, with depth and feeling, this album is as good as you can get, it is flawless and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves, it is clear how much hard work has gone into this album, Daybehavior are back and back in style. Well done Carl, Paulinda and Tommy on bringing us one of the best releases of the year

Eric C. Powell Album "True" Reviewed

Eric C. Powell is an electronic music artist based in the states and has been making music or been involved in music for a number of years, initially in the band Turning Keys. His new album "True", is the follow-up to his debut solo album "Back to Life", that was released in 2016.

The album opens with the title track, plenty of synth hooks and melodies drive this track, it has a very full sound with everything having its place in the mix, it instantly reminded me of the music Erasure were producing in the 1990s. A very strong opening track. "Waiting for the Time" has a darker sound palette, some neat bass sounds and good use of vocoded vocals, following that we have "How I Feel", which is very much in Vince Clarke territory, excellent use of synth sounds, I like the addition of choir sounds, very effective, a mid paced track that works really well, I love how the tracks builds and develops.

Next up we have a collaboration with his wife Andrea (who he met in his Turning Keys days), upbeat and again the use of synth sounds is used in a very effective way, Andrea has a very endearing voice which works brilliantly with Eric's music, especially on this track, definitely influenced by 1990s Erasure. A well constructed song and a highlight on this album. "Sunshine" again veers towards a dance track, great bassline and I like the sparseness during the verses, which showcase a fabulous vocal by Eric, as you would expect the chorus sections are fuller and it works a treat.

Eric is a big Depeche Mode fan and he has done a wonderful version of "The Sun and the Rainfall" and he has delivered again with another Depeche Mode cover on this album, he has worked his magic on "But Not Tonight", he keeps faithful to the original and it pays off big style, he certainly knows how best to use his synthesizers and get just the right sounds out of them, a top class rendition, an obvious highlight on the album.

In 2017 Eric wrote a special instrumental track called "Noise Zombie", for the KV331, Audio Synthmaster Track Contest, the track was awarded 3rd place. As well as the expected array of synthesizer sounds, he has used Piano on the song, which cuts through the obliqueness of the track, It would certainly be perfect for a film soundtrack.

"Be With You" is a more mellow track and has a Depeche Mode influence, both in the sound and the way the track is constructed, Eric delivers on the vocal front again, lots going on in the synth department, a solid track.

Now in 2018 one of THE best electronic tracks produced, was the brilliant "Click", which was a collaboration between Eric and Darwin McD, and I am so pleased the track is on this album, Included is the ECP Emerald Vocal Remix, Andrea provides another brilliant vocal, which works in perfect harmony with Eric's vocals, it has everything you need in a perfect synthpop track, it's catchy, melodic and has a rousing chorus, he couldn't have closed the album with a better track, and Eric, Andrea and DarwinMcD deserve a lot of credit for making such a fantastic synthpop song, well done to all concerned.

Eric is a real talent, his songwriting is exceptional and he knows how to get the best out of a synth, an album that is a joy to listen to from start to finish, one every synthpop fan should have in their collection.

9/10

True - The Story Of Eric C. Powell

Welcome, to “True – The Story Of Eric C Powell”

Eric C Powell, is an electronic music artist, based in Texas, in the states, his love for electronic music goes back to his youth, and he started writing his own songs, at the age of 16, after he got his first synthesizer, a Roland Juno 106.

Eric was encouraged to form his own band, during his university years, and formed the band Turning Keys, Eric was the vocalist and songwriter. The band also included female vocalist Andrea Matthews, who would eventually get married to Eric. The band went on to release 2 EP’s “Opening Doors” in 1990, and “Stay” in 1993, in addition they released 2 albums, their debut album “Waiting”, was released on Cassette in 1992, and they followed that up, with the album “Age Of Wonder”, in 1995.

Turning Keys also performed live, and supported the likes of Missing Persons, Depeche Mode and A Flock Of Seagulls who were massive stateside, in the 80s.

Eric moved on from Turning Keys, and continued as a Music Director, working with various artists and musicians. After moving to Texas, he was keen to make electronic music once again, and re-built his home studio, and set about recording material for a solo album, and In November 2016, he released the album “Back To Life”, which included tracks, such as, “Understand”, “Gone”, and a cover of the Depeche Mode track “The Sun And The Rainfall”.

Earlier in the same year, Eric released a remastered collection of material by his former band, Turning Keys, this would feature tracks from the album “Waiting”, as well as, tracks from their “Opening Doors EP”.

In December 2017, Eric released a new single called “Noise Zombie”, the track was entered into, the  KV331, Audio Synthmaster Track Contest, and managed to achieve 3rd place, with the track, quite an achievement.

In May 2018 Eric collaborated, with Darwin MCD on a new track, called “Click”, a stunning piece of synthpop music, a 4 track EP was released , as well as, an 8 track remix EP, with remixes by Andrik Arkane, Nature Of Wires and 4 remixes by UK musician Fused.

Without doubt, one of the best synthpop tracks released in 2018. The track even got played on BBC Music Introducing, such was its popularity.

DarwinMCD & Eric Powell, were also runners up, for Best Electro Act, in Online Radio Awards, fully deserved too.

The following month, Eric released the single “True”, a further taster for his new album.

Before the year was out, Eric teamed up with Andrea, on a Christmas single called “O Come Emmanuel”, which was given a stunning electronic makeover.

In January 2019 a further single was released, called “Need A Place”, which again featured Andrea Powell, on vocals.

“Need A Place”, is a track off Eric’s brand new album “True”, that has just been released, the album is influenced by the likes of OMD, Pet Shop Boys and Erasure, and as well as including “Need A Place”, it also included the singles “Noise Zombie”, “Click”, and “True”.
