The Best Of Times - The Story Of Eurotix
The Best Of Times, The Story Of Eurotix
Eurotix are a Synthpop duo from Sweden, Dennis Alexis
Hellstrom and Larry Forsberg formed Eurotix in 2012, Dennis was already
recording songs under the name Bimbo Boy and Larry was an accomplished
songwriter, co-writing several songs for Sweden’s equivalent of the
pre-selection for the Eurovision song contest.
Their main aim when they formed Eurotix was to put the
pop into Synthpop, and they certainly do that, with their extensive catalogue
of melody driven songs.
Their first release was a 4 track digital Download only
EP, released in November 2013, which featured the tracks, “Supernatural (12
Inch Version)”, Replay, A Blue Ocean Dream remix of “I Plead Insanity” as well
as the lead track, the original version of “I Plead Insanity”.
In March 2014, Eurotix released their second EP, again a
4 track Digital Download, which featured four very strong tracks, “Clubland”, “When You Go”, “We Could
Have Been” and “Life As It Slips Away”.
The band released their debut album “The Secret” in May
2014, the album featured 12 tracks and was warmly received by fans and gained
excellent reviews, and rightly so. The album featured both “I Plead Insanity”
and “Life As It Slips Away”, as well as fan favourites like, “European Man”,
“The Secret”, “Superstar” and the brilliant ballad “After Before, Before
After”.
A 3rd track from the album “The Secret” was
featured on the bands next EP release, “Lets Die Young”, the EP also featured a
cover version of the Alphaville track “Lies”, “Come And Hold Me”, “Kill Another
Day” in addition to the lead track “Lets Die Young”.
At the end of November 2014, they released the stunning
ballad “Are You Strong Enough”, backed with 3 new tracks, “Into The Future”,
“Eastern Bloc” and one of their best B Sides to date, “When You Are In My
Dreams”. The track “Are You Strong Enough” didn’t feature on the album “Deux”
but would feature on a future B Sides collection
The band were hard at work recording tracks for their
next album “Deux” and in May 2015 they released their first single from the
album, “Kiss Them For Me”, the single was backed by a brilliant video parody of
Charles And Diana. The 4 track EP also featured the tracks, “Computer Dating”,
“Un Chanson Pour L’Eurovision, as well as another outstanding B Side “I Don’t
Hate You Anymore”, heavily influenced by the Visage track “Fade To grey”. A
companion 5 track remixes EP was also released that features remixes of “Kiss
Them For Me” and “Are You Strong Enough”.
Their second album “Deux” was released at the beginning
of November 2015 and was packed full of strong melodic Synthpop songs, such as,
“The Best Of Times”, “Only For Love”, “”Will You Remember Me”, “Kiss Them For
Me”, “The Innocent Years” and "Tonight", strongly influenced by Ultravox.
In March 2016 they released a further track from “Deux”
and that was the track “The Best Of Times”, other tracks featured included,
“Face Down”, “You Won’t See Me Dancing” and
“Hi-NRG Superman”. Larry was challenged to make a radio edit of the
track “The Best Of Times”, as the album version was nearly 6 minutes long.
In July they decided to release a compilation called
“Besides”, which featured a collection of their B Sides, certainly an excellent
move as their B Sides are very strong, my personal favourite off this album is
an early B side, “When You Go” a track off their second EP.
It wasn’t long before the band headed into the studio to
work on their third studio album “Pop” and in March 2017 fans were rewarded
with a new 4 track EP, the EP featured the songs “If You Were A War”, “I’ll Be
Your Satellite”, “When Did Your Heart Grow Cold” and “Conquer The Universe”.
Interestingly none of these tracks would feature on their new album.
The band released a further 4 track EP in February 2018, along
with a 6 track remixes EP. The standard EP showcased another track, called
“Naughty Boys”, from their album “Pop”, the other tracks on the EP were
“Flicks”, “If Heaven Is Waiting” and “Trail Of Broken Hearts”, another fabulous
B Side.
Three months later the band did release an EP that would
showcase a track off the new album, a song called “My Eyes”, the EP was backed
with the tracks, “Broken Hearts” a remix, “Bang Bang (Heart On Fire)” and a
remix of the track “The Secret”.
Their 3rd studio album “Pop” was released at
the end of November 2018 and certainly packed a punch as it featured 15 songs.
As you would expect from Eurotix as their is a host of superbly crafted
Synthpop tracks, including, “Hypnotized”, “Call Me Up”, “Run, Run, Run”, “Blip
Disco”, “To Mars” and the beautiful “Cold”.
The track “Hypnotized” off the album was chosen as the
lead track for their latest EP, and as is customary with Eurotix, the EP
featured 4 tracks, with the bonus tracks being “Just Another Night”, “Call It
Summer” and a new version of their Christmas song “He’ll Be Home For
Christmas”. The track “Hypnotized” is a tribute to late Hollywood film star
Donna Reed.
This is a band that puts strong melodies first when
writing and producing their songs and the fact they have just released their
third studio album speaks volumes about their songwriting skills, the vocals of
Dennis are perfect for the studio work of Larry and their strong back catalogue
backs that up. In my eyes, this band deserves a much wider audience and I am so
pleased I discovered them right at the start of their journey.

Molecules And Carbon - The Story Of Machinista
Welcome to “Molecules And Carbon”, the story of
Machinista.
Machinista are a dark electronic pop band based in Malmo,
Sweden. They formed in December 2012 and are a duo, consisting of John
Lindqwister and Richard Flow. Vocalist John had been in bands such as Cat Rapes
Dog and Basswood Dollies, before forming Machinista, whilst Richard had been in
bands such as Haze For Sale and Vision Talk, Vision Talk were an italodisco duo
that had success on the independent electronic music scene and released several
excellent albums and singles. Vision Talk’s best tracks included, “Wave My Last
Goodbye”, “Unlike”, “Promises” and the brilliant “By My Side”.
John and Richard decided to form Machinista, as an
alternative, to the music they were making, in the other bands, they were
involved with and decided to record a cover version of one of David Bowie’s
best known songs “Heroes”, not an easy track, to do an electronic
interpretation of, but they certainly pulled it off.
They received excellent feedback for their Bowie cover
version and they soon started attracting a fan
base. Buoyed by this, they decided to start recording songs of their
own, one of the first was the track “Molecules And Carbon”. Further tracks were
recorded for their debut album, and in early March 2014 they released their
first EP “Arizona Lights”, the EP featured 10 tracks, including, “Salvation”,
“Pushing The Angels Astray”, “Wasted” and of course the lead track “Arizona
Lights”.
The Arizona Lights EP also featured remixes of the tracks
“Salvation” and “Pushing The Angels Astray”.
The EP was well received by fans in the electronic music
community.
In May 2104 the band released their debut album
“Zenoglossy”, the album featured 11 tracks, including “Salvation”, the single
“Arizona Lights”, their cover version of “Heroes”, “Molecules And Carbon” and
the excellent “Summersault”
In June 2015 the band unleashed their second album
“Garmonbozia”, a superb follow up to their debut album, with a stunning
collection of 10 outstanding tracks, including, “We Are Rockets”, “Picture
Frame Eternity”, “Surprised By Death”, “Inbetween And Above It All” and the
brilliant “Dark Heart Of Me”.
2015 proved to be a busy year for the band, as in
November of that year they released a special Edition of their debut album,
which was a 2CD set, the first CD featured the original album, whilst the
second CD featured various remixes of tracks off the album by the likes of
Spacebuoy, Erotic Elk, Judas and Vogon Poetry, who provided a remix of the
track “Salvation”.
At this point the band were recording tracks for their
third album and released a new single called “Pain Of Every Day” in December
2016, their last on the Analogue Trash Record Label. The single featured 7
tracks, including 6 remixes of “Pain Of Every Day” by the likes of Assemblage
23, Cyborgdrive, Antibody and Oren Amram,
as well as the original single version.
As well as releasing a final single for the Analogue
Trash Label in December 2016, the band also released a further 2 track single
called “Seconds Minutes Hours” for their new label, Infacted Recordings. A
further taster for their next album, the single was a 2 track digital download
release, that included the BRD Evolution Mix of “Seconds Minutes Hours”, as
well as the original version of the track.
In September 2017 the band released the single “Let
Darkness In”, a 2 track digital download single that also featured the track
“Universe Is Here”.
As Machinista put the finishing touches to their third
album they released a four track single called “Black Tide” in late 2018. The
single featured a demo of “Black Tide”, 2 remixes of “Dark Heart Of Me” as well
as the lead track “Black Tide”.
All being well the band will be releasing their third
album in the early part of 2019, which is something to really look forward to and as the band enjoy playing live and I am sure their will play dates to promote the
new album.

Metroland's Remix Album "Framed" Reviewed
Metroland's latest concept album "Men In A Frame" has evolved into something quite big, 2 Expositions showcasing music from the album and the photography that inspired the music, with their latest Expo currently being held in their home city, Mechelen in Belguim.
To coincide with their latest exhibition they have also released a double yellow vinyl remix album, a remix CD, and 2 special USB Key releases, the first, which is yellow, contains all the tracks from the remixes project and bonus tracks, the second key, which is black, is a true Metroland collector's item, as it contains a feature length documentary about the band, 3 special 3 track EP's, Mega-Mixes and artwork.
A treasure trove of material!
This review concentrates on the double yellow vinyl remix album "Framed", across the 2 vinyl albums are remixes of every track from "men In A Frame" and the 2 singles "Man In A Frame" and "Memorabilia".
Side A kicks off with the OT-Vorsprung Remix of "Proiezione 41-828", which has a superb driving bass-line dominating the track, key elements of the original version have been left intact, the melody line and the vocals, combined the remix works really well, very impressive start.
Next we have the Real Sounds From A Matrix Edit of "La Macchia D'Aqua", I love the drums, very Depeche Mode as are other elements of the mix including the stabbed bass-line and synths, It took quite a few listens to get into this track, quite a departure from the original version, sounds a lot darker.
The final track on Side A of the vinyl is the Aavikko Remix of "B-Old", the original mix is one of my favourite tracks on "Men In A Frame". The remix has more of a "Pop" feel to it, as with the opening track key elements of the original remain intact, with the new remixed parts blending in really well, this also has a Depeche Mode influence running through it, excellent job done on this remix.
.....and so we flip the vinyl over to enjoy side B
The first track "The Speed Of Life III" is remixed by Elektroklange, a band we have featured on our Kraftwerk themed shows, and it is no surprise that this remix has the biggest Kraftwerk influence of all the tracks on "Framed", it is an outstanding remix, upbeat and minimal with great use of the "Speak & Spell" voice machine and subtle sequencers. My favourite remix on the album, pure perfection.
Psy'Aviah, another band I am very familiar with have remixed the next track "Hope" and as you would expect of them, they have given the track an atmospheric makeover, with great use of pad sounds over a clean rhythm section, without doubt this was the perfect track for Psy'Aviah to remix. Another remix I rate highly.
Next we have Kurt Baggaley's Destination Remix of "Next Choice" and Kurt delivers a fabulous mix, great percussive parts and rhythm section, again he hasn't tried to re-invent the track and kept quite faithful to the original version, his minimal approach works perfectly, definitely one of the best remixes on the album, the Satnav voice work really well in this mix and it is one of my favourite remixes on the album.
The opening track on Side C is the Passenger S Perennial Mix of "Creative Rose" and what a fantastic job he his has done, the track feels more rounded and full and he has decided to go down the route of an 80s style extended version. The sequencers are locked and loaded, with the bottom end sequencers taking centre stage, fantastic!
Next we have the Never Trust An Implant Remix of "Trust", this leans towards the industrial genre, with it's thumping bass-line, bleeps and synth noises, this has been heavily re-worked and is the one track on the album that I think doesn't work, it's to varied.
"Concrete Witness", the Analogue Audio Association Remix 3, is an interesting remix, I felt the original version was very difficult to get into but this remix has gained my attention, it is almost trance like and focuses on the sequencer elements of the song, which is punctuated by a minimalistic bass-line and a basic rhythm pattern. I really like this remix.
On to side D.....
The Der Dritte Raum Remix of "memorabilia" has a four to the floor dance beat with Kraftwerk sounding synth parts, indeed, It wouldn't be out of place on the German bands' "The Mix" album. This mix has grown on me a lot, it is hypnotic and has been re-worked a fair bit from the original version and is another standout remix and clocks in at over 8 minutes.
"Shades Of Pale" has been given a major overhaul in the Die Robo Sapiens Remix keeping some of the original melody in place and the vocal samples, the rhythm section and bass-line is new, at times it seems a bit cluttered this mix, so I am a little undecided about it, what I will say is Metroland's own remix of the track is definitely superior.
The Vinyl remix album concludes with the Frohm remix of "Man In A Frame", this is pure pop/dance, a fantastic new bass-line, also a very atmospheric synth line has been introduced, all working together really well, the vocals are much more minimal but that works so well in the context of the remix.
Included with the vinyl is a remix CD called "Framed Anew", which features 9 of the remixes taken from the Vinyl remix album and three exclusive remixes, including yje Zusammenklang Mix of "Memorabilia, originally included on the "Memorabilia" Remixes EP release, a new remix of "Man In A Frame" by Metroland titled "Decibel Sintetico", as well as, the Re-Framed by Metroland remix of "Shades Of Pale".
It is always a gamble when you put your faith in other people remixing your songs, however, Metroland needn't be concerned as "Framed" is an excellent collection of remixes, what is impressive is that they decided to have every track on the album remixed as well as the associated singles. The yellow vinyl looks superb and is housed in a beautifully designed double sleeve, the perfect way to draw a line under the whole photography concept, especially when you consider that they also released the 2 USB Keys at the same time, what started out as a relatively simple and straight forward concept developed into a much more complex affair.
Metroland have worked very hard on everything associated with the "Men In A Frame" project and "Framed" is the icing on the cake, "Framed" is an absolute pleasure to listen to and if you don't have this in your collection yet, don't hesitate to get it, you won't be disappointed.
9/10
