Put The Needle On The Record - Week #35

Put The Needle On The Record Week #35 Blancmange - Happy Families

For this weeks feature we go back to September 1982 and the Blancmange album "Happy Familes".

This was the bands debut album and I first came across Blancmange via the "Some Bizarre Album" compilation that featured the brilliant "Sad Day", incidently the Some Bizarre album also included unknown acts at the time, Depeche Mode, B-Movie, Soft Cell and The The. They soon got signed to London Records and released the double A side "I've Seen The Word" (one of my top 3 favourite Blancmange tracks) and God's Kitchen (a track I have never liked and baffled why it was released as a single). The album has aged well and is still an album I enjoy listening too. Why later re-issues have the orchestrated version of "Waves" rather than the original version baffles me, the original is miles better. At the time of release the album received mixed reviews and, for me, it is an essential 80s album. One thing is for sure it was a unique sounding album.

I can't recall where I bought this album from, but I do remember the DJ and the Rotters Club in Manchester playing a promo of the new version of "Waves" as part of his set!

The album featured 4 singles, "I've Seen The Word"/"God's Kitchen" (which reached number 65 in the UK Singles chart), "Feel Me" (which reached number 46 in the UK Singles chart), "Living On The Ceiling", their biggest hit (which reached number 7 in the UK Singles chart) and "Waves" (which reached number 19 in the UK Singles Chart).

The album reached number 30 in the UK Album Chart.

Synthetik FM Album "Undercover 80s - Volume 1" Reviewed

Synthetik FM is the music project of Bobby Clark, who is based in Knoxville, Tennessee in the states, his influences are clearly 1980s synthpop and New Wave and the new album titled "Underground 80s - Volume 1" (work on volume 2 has already started) is what we are reviewing. The album features his electronic takes on a wide range of 80s artists and he has teamed up with vocalists from all over the world, the interesting thing about this release, is the fact he has chosen some lesser know hits, including music by John Foxx, Robert Palmer, Camouflage, Giorgio Moroder and Captain Sensible, alongside some classic tracks originally recorded by Tears For Fears, Kraftwerk, China Crisis, Modern Talking and more!

The album opens with a refreshing take on the Kraftwerk track "Pocket Calculator", I am a massive Kraftwerk fan and this version is superbly put together, it has been given a modern overhaul with some excellent voice parts, the mix also features sounds heard on Kraftwerk's original.

"Brother Louie", was a very successful single by Modern Talking and the version on this album stays pretty close to the original, it captures the energy of the original and the synth sounds are exceptional, especially those orchestra stabs, a wonderful version of a very popoular song from the 1980s.

I must admit I never anticipated to hear a Captain Sensible track on this album, but that is one of the interesting things about this album, some of the choices are left of centre, and I say that in a positive way, the electronic re-working of "Wot" is fabulous and the vocals are brilliant, the fusion of synths and vocals are just perfect.

The cover of the Giorgio Moroder track "From Here To Eternity" is mindblowing, the disco elements of the original have been brilliantly reproduced....I would love to hear a cover of Donna Summers "I Feel Love"! A flawless re-creation of the music and vocals. A 5 1/2 minute disco romp! The attention to detail of these cover versions is remarkable.

I have to confess the track "Will You Be There" had me stumped, it isn't a track I have heard before and had no idea who did the original version, searching online proved a nightmare because the only results I got were from Michael Jackson's track of the same name! I stuck with it and finally discovered that it was originally recorded by Celebrate The Nun and my word Synthetik FM's version is a mirror image of the original, an amazing cover and the track is excellent, it's catchy and upbeat, brilliant track! I did say that the album included some obscure 80s tracks!

Tears For Fears 80s output was definitely big for me and I'm so pleased to hear a version of "Change", excellent sequencers and a throbbing beat and the vocals are a very close match to the original, I like the atmospheric synth in the track, the other key thing for me is the fact that the version contained here is a dance re-work, definitely a more upbeat version.

"Wishful Thinking" is oustanding, those synths that play the main hook are devine and add atmosphere to the track, nice punchy rhythm and once again the vocal is staggeringly close to the original version, an incredible rendition of China Crisis' biggest hit, one of my favourite tracks on the album.

The atmospheric theme continues on "I Hope I Never", wonderful synth pad sounds that sway, a beautiful rendition of the track originally recorded by Split Enz, excellent vocal too as it isn't an easy track to sing, I love that middle 8 section of the song, I think I only ever heard the original version once or twice and this is a superb cover.

"Images Of Heaven" is another song that fits into the more obscure cover versions on this album, I have never heard the original version before, recorded by Peter Godwin and I listened to the version on this album before listening to the original on YouTube, the version contained here is better than the original, more depth and stronger soundwise, it is superbly produced as is the whole album.

Next we have a cover of the Dead Or Alive track "Turn Around And Count 2 Ten" and it packs a punch, definitelty has the energy of the original, superb music and strong vocal, defintely captures THAT 80s sound, another brilliant cover.

"Johnny And Mary" was originally recorded by Robert Palmer and Featured on his album "Clues" an album I bought back in 1980 because it included a version of the Gary Numan track "I Dream Of Wires"! The version captures the spirit of the original so has that driving bass-line and the synth sounds, another impressive version of one of my favourite Robert Palmer songs.

Next we have a cover of a fabulous track originally recorded by Camouflage, "Love Is A Shield" and it has been superbly replicated here, with once again, the vocals really close to the original, the sounds have more depth and attention to detail has to be admired.

I am so delighted that a John Foxx cover version of "Europe After The Rain" has been recorded for this album, the original is brilliant and John is one of my favourite artists so I know his music and have to say this is a stunning version, brilliant rhythm, atmospheric pads, the original was quite organic soundwise this is a more electronic version and it certainly works really well, another big favourite for me.

The album closes with a cover version of "Lost And Memorized" by Cee Farrow, a song I have never heard before and I love it, really clean sound and again I prefer this version as there is more to it compared to the original, it's a wonderful track and I must delve into the music catalogue of Cee Farrow.

What we have here are 14 superbly produced versions of a wide range of 80s tracks and is a joy to listen too from start to finish, what is appealing is the choice of tracks, to take on the more obscure tracks takes guts and it has paid off big time, a quite stunning album that will be on heavy rotation, the music is exceptional and the vocal talents across all the tracks is to be admired.

As for Bobby, clearly a gifted musician and I would also like to mention Michael Kauzlarich aka X-Sonic, of Johnson City in Tennessee, whom Bobby first worked with back in 2013 when remixing a couple of tracks for him, as in addition to doing vocals on two songs, he mixed and engineered about 98% of the album and has done an exceptional job.

I and I cannot wait for volume 2!!

10/10 A flawless album!

Put The Needle On The Record - Week #34

Put The Needle On The Record Week #34 Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret

For this weeks feature we go back to November 1981 and the Soft Cell album "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret".

This was the bands first album and is highly regarded as a classic 80s album and I agree, both me and my brother listened to this album a lot when it first came out, and was seen as controversial because of its nod towards the sex industry and the seedy streets of Soho in London, a brave album in some ways and who else could release a song called "Sex Dwarf"!

This would have been another purchase from HMV in Market Street in Manchester!

Over the years I felt the album didn't age very well and seldom played the LP, however, the recent 6 Disc Super Deluxe edition gave me the chance to re-evaluate this record and I have to say it is a bloody fantastic album, with only the track "Frustration" being a track I never really liked. The 6 CD re-issue is well worth getting, new 12 inch mixes of all the tracks, instrumentals, bonus tracks, a well put together collection.

The album featured 3 singles, "Tainted Love" backed with "Where Did Our Love Go" (which reached number 1 in the UK Singles chart, and number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100), "Bedsitter", the 12 Inch Version is one of my all time favourite 12 Inch Singles (which reached number 4 in the UK Singles chart) and "Say Hello Wave Goodbye", the greatest synth ballad of all tme (which reached number 3 in the UK Singles chart).

The album reached number 5 in the UK Album Chart.

Track Listing

Frustration
Tainted Love
Seedy Films
Youth
Sex Dwarf
Entertain Me
Chips On My Shoulder
Bedsitter
Secret Life
Say hello Wave Goodbye

If you have this album in your collection, dig it out and give it a spin!

Put The Needle On The Record - Week #33

Put The Needle On The Record Week #33 Ultravox - Vienna

For this weeks feature we go back to July 1980 and the Ultravox album "Vienna".

I was a big fan on the first era of Ultravox, with John Foxx as the singer, especially the album "Systems Of Romance", which is one of my all time favourite albums, a groundbreaking album, after the band was dropped by their label after the "Systems Of Romance" album, John went on to start his solo career with another fabulous album from 1980. "Metamatic". Ultravox were not deterred" and continued with a new vocalist, Midge Ure and in 1980 they released the stunning album "Vienna", one of THE greatest ever albums released in the 80s.

I clearly remember buying this record on the day of release, I also bought the 12 inch Public Image single "Flowers Of Romance" on the same day....from my second home, HMV on Market street in Manchester. I think the cover of the "Vienna" album is a masterpiece in its own right, excellent photography.

This is one of those rare albums where every track on the album could have been released as a single, aside from the singles released, the tracks "New Europeans" "Western Promise" and "Private Lives" would easily have merited being released as singles. This album is very close and indeed quite possible my favourite album of all time, it is certainly in my Top 5.

The album featured 4 singles, "Sleepwalk" (which reached number 29 on the UK Singles chart, it deserved to do better), "Passing Strangers" (which amazingly only reached number 57 in the UK Singles chart), "Vienna" (which reached number 2 in the UK Singles chart and stayed in that position for 4 weeks, Joe Dolce's "Shaddap You Face", the biggest injustic in pop history - how the hell did that stop "Vienna" from reaching number 1) and "All Stood Still" (which reached number 8 in the UK Singles chart).

The album also reached number 3 in the UK Album Chart.

It is very sad that we lost Chris Cross from the band this year.

Track Listing

Astradyne
New Europeans
Private Lives
Passing Strangers
Sleepwalk
Mr X
Western Promise
Vienna
All Stood Still

Interestingly the Northern American edition of the album had a different track listing that looked like this:

Sleepwalk
Passing Strangers
New Europeans
Private Lives
Astradyne
Mr X
Western Promise
Vienna
All Stood Still

If you have this album in your collection, dig it out and give it a spin!

Put The Needle On The Record - Week #32

Put The Needle On The Record Week #32 ELO - Discovery

For this weeks feature we go back to June 1979 and the Electric Light Orchestra album "Discovery".

"Discovery" was the 8th studio album released by ELO and for me their best album and a masterpiece. Quite a few of my friends at school were into ELO, I liked some of their music and enjoyed the album "Out Of The Blue", however, for me this is the definitive ELO album, with every track being outstanding, as ever, I am listening to the album whilst writing this feature!

The album featured 4 singles, "Shine A Little Love" (which reached number 6 on the UK Singles chart and number 8 on the Billboard 100), "The Diary of Horace Wimp" (which reached number 8 in the UK Singles chart), "Don't Bring Me Down", their best ever track for me (which reached number 3 in the UK Singles chart and number 4 on the Billboard 100), and the double A side "Confusion" and "Last Train To London" (which reached number 8 in the UK Singles chart and number 37 on the Billboard 100).

The album also reached number 1 in the UK Album Chart, and number 5 on the Billboard 100 album chart.

Track Listing

Shine A Little Love
Confusion
Need Her Love
The Diary Of Horace Wimp
Last Train To London
Midnight Blue
On The Run
Wishing
Don't Bring Me Down

I would guess if you have this album in your collection, you haven't played it in years, dig it out and give it a spin!

Put The Needle On The Record - Week #31

Put The Needle On The Record Week #31 Heaven 17 - The Luxury Gap

For this weeks feature we go back to April 1983 and the Heaven 17 album "The Luxury Gap".

"The Luxury Gap" was the second album released by Heaven 17 and is their biggest selling album and rightly so, it is an outstanding album. It was quite a departure from their debut album "Penthouse And Pavement" as it contained fabulous orchestration and lush sound, superbly produced by the band. Undoubtably one of the key albums from the 1980s, it is an album I still play a lot to this day. If ever an album was made for a dolby atmos makeover, this is it!

5 singles were released off the album, "Let Me Go", my favourite Heaven 17 song, (which reached number 41 in the UK Singles Chart - Deserved to be a top 10 hit at least!), "Temptation" (which reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart), "We Live So Fast" (which was only released in the United States), "Come Live With Me" (which reached number 5 in the UK Singles Chart) and "Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry", the one track on the album I don't like, a mystery how it was chosen as a single! (which reached number 17 in the UK Singles Chart).

Track Listing

Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry
Who'll Stop The Rain
Let Me Go
Key To The World
Temptation
Come Live With Me
Lady Ice And Mr Hex
We Live So Fast
The Best Kept Secret

So if you have the album in your collection and have n't played it in a while, dig it out and give it a spin!
